FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS |
|
1. What’s with your questionnaire?Since we can’t meet applicants in person, it’s a helpful tool for us to get a sense of who you are and how you think. If you find it to be tedious or annoying, then our program is most likely not for you. There are no correct answers; we don’t care if you’ve never read a screenwriting book or if your favorite movie is Howard the Duck. Just be yourself.2. What is a logline? It is a concise and effective summation of your script in one or two sentences. A good logline should give a sense of both tone and concept. 3. By “sequence,” what do you mean? My opening scene? Sometimes the opening sequence is just the opening scene (like in Jaws). Other times, it’s a bit longer (like in Raiders of the Lost Ark). It is up to you though to define your opening sequence. Part of our interest in asking this is to see how you view your own story – if your sense of pacing is good, if there is a compelling interest to read further, if the sequence itself is structured well, and so on. 4. Why do you do this? It’s unfair – my screenplay must be read from beginning to end. Skilled screenwriters work with an economy of language and can make their ideas seem interesting in a brief logline. Furthermore, the potential strength of a screenplay’s execution will be evident from the very first sequence. If your logline and first sequence leave us wanting more, you’ve done your job. | |
